Worm castings are some of the most powerful soil additives that you can find anywhere. Castings are essentially just the manure from a worm. If you’ve got a worm that you can feed, then you can make worm castings.

While it doesn’t really sound complicated at first glance, is it really worth it to make your own worm castings? Or should you just find a good brand that you can buy and stick with that instead?  Simple Grow Soil dives deep into these questions for you.

Effort Involved

One thing to consider is that you have to put forth some effort to make worm castings. While it may be simple, it does require some time and effort on your part.

You’ll have to feed the worms, then wait a certain period of time and then feed them again. Depending on what type of worms you have, the time in between feedings will vary from a few days to a few weeks. If you’re not careful, you could end up killing the worms by not feeding them frequently enough.

Once they’ve turned the food into castings, you also have to extract the castings from the container somehow. You’ve got worms, castings and probably some leftover junk to somehow separate. Most people that do this on a small scale use some kind of a handheld screen to extract the castings.

That involves dumping the contents of the container through a screen and shaking the screen to remove the castings from the mixture. While it’s not a huge thing, it does take a little bit of time and effort to accomplish.

Equipment

While it doesn’t take a great deal of equipment to make worm castings at home, it does take some. You’ll need some kind of a worm bin to keep the worms in. This is typically just a plastic or wooden bin that you keep somewhere out of the way. It can be quite small, or could be pretty big, depending on how much worm castings you want to make. That means you’ll need to take up some space somewhere.

Besides a worm bin, you’ll also need a screen. The screen needs to be big enough for you to pour the contents of the bin onto it, so that it can filter out the castings. If the screen is the same size as the opening of the bin, that usually works best. As for taking up more space, you could just leave it on top of the worm bin while it’s being stored.

Depending on the method of production that you’re using, you may also need a container for their feed. This way you can easily pour more feed into the bin when the worms need to be fed. If you’re using red wigglers or some other kind of compost worm, you can probably avoid this, as you’ll be adding table scraps and other things to the bin for food.

Quality

The quality of worm castings can vary drastically from one source to the next. A lot of it comes down to the food source that you give the worms, as well as what type of worms you use. If you use a composting worm like a red wiggler, the quality of the casting you produce isn’t going to be as high as if you use African Nightcrawlers and feed them a good diet.

With composting, the castings come out inconsistent with different nutrients and minerals in them. This can lead to varying results with your plants. One batch may work great while another one doesn’t do much to your garden.

Is it Worth It?

Ultimately, is it worth it to make your own worm castings? For most people...probably not. When you think about the time and effort and equipment involved, as well as the inconsistent results, it’s not the best arrangement. If you have the time and energy and enjoy doing this kind of thing yourself, then by all means. Go for it. However, the majority of people don’t have the time, or don’t feel confident in their ability to make a consistent product.

When you instead buy a quality product like Simple Grow Worm Castings, you can rest assured that it’s the same thing every time. The worms are fed a consistent diet and it’s specially formulated to produce the perfect castings. The castings come out working perfectly for your plants every time.

You can also rest easy knowing that you didn’t forget to feed the worms and accidentally killed them.
