Disease Prevention

One of the big challenges that people have when growing potted plants is that the plants contract diseases. Growing indoors can be especially difficult because plants are more prone to picking up diseases.

When they’re not in direct sunlight as often as they would be outside, it can be easier for diseases to manifest. With the humidity being different than it is outside, this also can create an environment that is ripe for disease.

Luckily, when you use worm castings in your potted plants, the odds of your plants contracting a disease go down considerably. The microbes in the worm castings form a type of protective barrier around the plant and in the soil.

This means that if a disease makes its way into the area, it won’t be able to take root and destroy the plant. If you’ve been struggling to grow plants indoors, this can be a huge thing for making you more successful.

Growth Boosting

Remember those microbes I mentioned earlier? Those things are great for boosting plant growth also as it turns out. The worm’s gut has thousands of good bacteria in it that comes out on the casting. These microbes are perfect for rapidly boosting the growth of all kinds of plants.

These microbes can drastically improve the condition of the soil that the potted plants are in. In nature, when earthworms are present, they naturally condition the soil like this. They eat dirt and waste and then turn it into castings. When castings are present in large quantities in the soil, plants will grow like crazy.

Moisture Regulation

Regulating the moisture around their plants is another common challenge that people have when growing potted plants. The humidity level is often different indoors when compared to how plants live outside. When the moisture level is too high, it can encourage plant disease and root rot.

Another nice thing about worm castings is that they work to regulate the moisture level around the roots of the plant. When they’re mixed into the soil, they will absorb water that makes its way into the dirt. Then at the perfect time, they’ll release the moisture.

If the plant doesn’t need it, it’ll stay in the castings longer. This helps ensure that your indoor plants get the right amount of water at all times. If you water too much, the castings probably won’t be able to overcome that, so you’ll still need to be careful. But they can help accommodate for some errors along the way.

Just don’t drown the plants and you should be good.

Aeration

Another nice thing about mixing in worm castings into your potted plants is that they help aerate the soil. In some potted plants, the soil gets packed down and hard. This makes it really difficult for oxygen to get to the roots of the plant.

When you have castings in the soil, it won’t be able to fully pack down. Worm castings particles are like little tiny balls that won’t smash down. By increasing the oxygen to the roots of the plant, your plants will be much more likely to thrive in this environment.

Trace Minerals and Nutrients

Besides the microbes, worm castings are also bursting at the seams with nutrients and trace minerals. You’ll find things such as nitrogen, phosphorus, magnesium, potassium, calcium, and sulfur. While the percentages may not seem that high, they are in a format that is readily absorbed by plants.

Many commercial fertilizers have high levels of minerals but they are not in a format that can actually be absorbed by the plant. This means that most of the nutrients aren’t actually utilized by the plant and are wasted. With worm castings, the nutrients and minerals are in the perfect format to be absorbed and utilized immediately. This helps provide an immediate boost to plants.

Regardless of what kind of potted plant you are trying to grow, pure earthworm castings from Simple Grow can make a big difference. The ideal way to apply it is to mix about 20-30% worm castings into the soil of the potted plant.

Many people combine it with compost and other additives to create an ideal growth environment. The good news is that you can’t really use too much worm castings as they will never burn your plants. Using a higher percentage of worm castings may provide you with even better results.
